NG Bailey needed an online induction system in different languages

For their pioneering UK BIC fit out, which started in 2019, NG Bailey required a custom software solution, tailored to provide health and safety inductions to both their regular supply chain and the client’s preferred overseas suppliers. The web application needed to be multilingual, with the entire process translated into four additional languages; French, German, Korean and Japanese. The Pre Enrolment service delivered the best online induction system in terms of quality and value.

NG Bailey needed simple, clear and accurate online induction content

Through the Pre Enrolment service, a bespoke custom software, a multilingual online induction system was delivered for the UK BIC fit out.
Whilst translating the language of short sections of text is straightforward, ensuring cultural sensitivity in the translation is paramount to ensuring the end user’s comprehension. This is critical for communicating health and safety information.
The UK BIC fit out’s existing health and safety induction content was initially reviewed and refine it to its simplest and clearest form. An holistic approach was taken to also review all of the site signage at the same time; this ensured the consistency of words, phrase and even representative symbols.

An holistic approach is necessary to make the communication of health and safety information effective. An online induction system is the first time that operatives (construction workers) encounter contractor specific health and safety information; in order to be effective, this experience has to be repeated consistently on site.

Pre Enrolment provided NG Bailey with an holistic translation service for their online induction system

NG Bailey’s health and safety induction presentation was simplified and digitalised. Corresponding signage was tailored specifically for the UK BIC fit out with clear, consistent words, phases, typeface and symbols. This content was translated into French, German, Korean and Japanese before being provided to the UK BIC fit out team, whilst the Pre Enrolment system was being developed.
The bespoke custom software, multilingual online induction system that was developed, ‘NGB Induct’, relied less heavily on words and descriptions and was instead more intuitive, using universal symbols.

Pre Enrolment used AI for the online induction system translations

Machine learning through AI was used to translate the majority of the online induction system wording, which was then checked by human translators. The UK BIC fit out health and safety induction presentation was translated into four additional languages, digitalised and incorporated.
The process of selecting a preferred language was added to the landing page of the Pre Enrolment system and to the menu bar. This made it possible for operatives (construction workers) to view any translation of the system at any stage of the process.

A service-led approach ensured that industry-specific health and safety translations were accurate

The approach of the Pre Enrolment service ensured that the translations on NG Bailey’s online induction system were accurate. How words and phrases are translated can have a significant impact on their interpretation; working with a specialist translation company ensured that industry-specific health and safety terms were accurately translated.
The technical requirements for NG Bailey’s online induction system needed to be delivered within a few days of them first getting in touch. This was achieved by reviewing the UK BIC fit out programme with the site team; the release of transitions on the system could then be sequenced based on when each supplier would be starting work.

A bespoke online induction system was delivered within a few days

The first iteration of NG Bailey’s online induction system was launched one week after they first got in touch in October 2019. This week 2 launch, meant that the online induction system launched before the fit out started, meaning that every operative (construction worker) on site from day one was inducted online and all data for the UK BIC fit out was captured from day 1.
NG Bailey’s bespoke Pre Enrolment system was then iterated and made multilingual, with all translations incorporated in time for the overseas suppliers to complete their health and safety inductions online.
